Care of your Joinery products
Most C&K clients are well aware of the difficulties of working with a
natural resource like timber. There is nothing quite like the unpredictable
behaviour of timber with its array of twists, bends, shakes and splits, and
nothing more frustrating than trying to work with it. The life of a timber
product relies on the care and consideration through the entire process;
from selection and manufacture, to fitting and future care and maintenance.
At C&K
our part begins with purchasing of the best quality materials for the
project in hand, guided by the policies and regulations of the timber
industry and in particular the code of conduct of the British Woodworking
Federation.
When
materials are delivered to our factory door, they are carefully checked and
measured for moisture content; only timber within an acceptable range is
suitable for use in the manufacture of quality joinery products. The process
of manufacture is completed in controlled conditions to ensure a stable and
moisture free workplace. Correct storage and protective packaging, where
necessary, is essential.
From
here the process continues with the client. C&K have a number of
recommendations for all customers in the essential care and handling of
joinery products.
It is
essential that all timber products are stored flat and in dry conditions,
especially doors. They must not be subjected to excessive heat, dryness or
sudden changes before and during installation. For example, if a door is
delivered to a building site or new building, it is essential the plaster,
texture or cement is completely dry; otherwise the excessive moisture
content present may result in the expansion of panels which could result in
the breakdown of joints.
Before
any work begins on a door and before fitting, the door should be checked as
fully acceptable. It is very important that doors are treated immediately
with a good quality timber finish or paint on all sides and edges, including
top and bottom edges and any cut outs made for hinges, letter boxes and
locks etc. Please also observe the manufacturer’s application instructions
carefully. Any reduction in the size of the door should be done equally from
both sides and from the bottom of the door. Locks must not be fitted at the
rail joints and should be hung with three good quality brass hinges.
Careful
preparation and consideration will ensure the life and efficiency of your
timber based product.
